An old wallet file can be valuable even when its original software no longer opens it. Interrupted copies, failing drives, accidental deletion, outdated apps, and damaged storage media create different recovery problems, but the first rule is the same: preserve the original and stop making changes to the device.
We evaluate recoverable wallet files and backups, then explain plainly whether there is enough material to justify a recovery attempt.
Situations we evaluate
Corrupt or unreadable wallet files. wallet.dat, Multibit, Electrum, and other legacy wallet files can fail after a bad copy, drive error, or partial overwrite. A file that an app rejects may still contain usable wallet data.
Deleted wallet files. Deletion does not immediately erase all data, but continued use of the drive can overwrite it. If the file was deleted recently, stop using that disk and preserve it before installing recovery tools.
Obsolete wallet software. Old wallet formats sometimes need a specific version of the original application or a careful export path. We work from copies so the source material is not put at unnecessary risk.
Damaged backup media. External drives, old laptops, USB sticks, and partial backup folders may hold wallet material even when the device itself is no longer practical to use.
What to do now
- Do not reinstall wallet software or save new files to the affected drive.
- Make one read-only copy if the storage device is still stable; otherwise leave it alone.
- Keep every related file, including backups, logs, and old archive folders.
- Note the wallet name, operating system, approximate date, and any error message.
- Request a free evaluation before sending files to anyone.
Avoid random repair tools and cracked wallet utilities. A bad tool can overwrite the only useful copy or expose private keys to someone else.
